The committee will determine how Indiana should spend the money it received from the settlement.

An 11-member committee will determine how to spend the $40.9 million Indiana is receiving as a result of the U.S. Department of Justice’s settlement over Volkswagen Corporation’s violations of the federal Clean Air Act.

Governor Eric Holcomb signed an executive order Thursday establishing the committee and naming the Indiana Department of Environmental Management as the administrative agency for the trust fund.

The committee is made up of representatives from state agencies, environmental organizations and educational institutions. The members will draft a plan for spending and distributing the funds, which will then be available for public comment.

Any money spent from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund must be used to offset the excess pollution emitted by cars associated with the automaker’s Clean Air Act violations.
